Votes For Women

About

From a small gathering in Seneca Falls in 1848, the Women’s Suffrage Movement waged a seventy-year battle to secure the most fundamental right of citizenship for half of the American population. The 19th Amendment, finally ratified in 1920, stands as a testament to the power of movements and the brilliant determination of the leaders of the suffrage movement and its rank and file members. The story of how suffragists won Votes for Women has never been more relevant. It is one of the greatest untold stories of American history.

Game Background

Votes for Women invites players to join the suffrage movement, organize support, and campaign for victory across the 48 states that were called to ratify the 19th Amendment in 1919-1920. Players navigate the era’s historic events, movement schisms, and political challenges to win.

And winning is not easy. The Suffragist player must have Congress pass the proposed amendment and then have three-fourths of the states (36 of the then 48 states) ratify the Amendment. The computer plays the Anti-Suffragists and wins by either preventing Congress from passing the proposed amendment or by having 13 states reject the Amendment. In actual history, it came down to one vote, just one single vote, by one legislator in Tennessee. Click here to see the story.

The game features over 100 event cards with period art, portraiture, and historic documents that can be played to campaign or organize the suffragist side of the issue. But it won’t be easy. The Anti-Suffragists are powerful and organized too.

Dig deeper into the history and maneuver through the critical choices that suffragists faced for a chance to guarantee equal franchise for all and win Votes For Women.

What people are saying

Great theme, presentation, and educational material.  Votes for Women has fairly straightforward decisions, low rules overhead, and repetitive events. This is actually welcome as I find it has more meat but still over in just over an hour.  Games can go down to the wire.  I once won on the final state voting by one die pip!

— Player Review

I love a good history game and boy is this ever one of those.  It’s a card-driven area influence game where two competing sides try to pass or prevent the 19th Amendment giving women a right they should have always had: the vote.  You can tell how much love of history went into this and the quality shows.  In addition, the game is excellent and full of tension and a fierce tug of war between the past and the future.  Easy to get into and genuinely fun, not to mention respectful of an impactful historical event.

— Player Review

The mechanics are very tight and the game does a great job of increasing tension as the rounds progress.
